During his visit to Viet Nam from 18 to 21 March, President of the French National Assembly Claude Bartolone held talks with National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, paid a courtesy visit to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and met with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the media at the French Embassy.

He also attended the Francophonie Festival 2016 organized at the University of Ha Noi, met and worked with Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Thanh Phong and visited some scenic spots of Viet Nam.

At the talks and meetings, the two sides expressed confidence and affirmed to exert effort to elevate parliamentary ties between the two countries for the benefits of the two peoples for peace and prosperity in the world.

The two sides expressed their belief that the visit would be an important landmark, strengthening relations between the two legislative bodies, contributing to make the deepened strategic partnership of the two countries more practical and effective.

At the talk, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said Viet Nam's National Assembly is developing the legal system in line with the 2013 Constitution, including laws relating to economy, trade and investment. Viet Nam’s law protects the legitimate rights and interests of foreign investors, including French investors. The Chairman suggested that in the future both sides should strengthen economic cooperation, especially in the fields of transport, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, science, education, healthcare, human resources training, thereby helping Viet Nam in international integration, and strengthening understanding between the two peoples. The two sides should focus on defense and security cooperation and contribute to preserving security and peace in the region and the world.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung maintained that to promote the strategic partnership, the ruling parties, the National Assemblies, the Governments, the Joint Committees and in particular businesses and localities of both sides should boost exchanges and promote cooperation in areas of strength of each country.

Regarding the East Sea, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung urged the French Parliament to actively support Viet Nam in ensuring maritime navigation and security, protesting against militarization of the East Sea, exchanging, discussing and adhering to international law in resolving disputes in the sea.

Agreeing to the recommendations of National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, Mr. Claude Bartolone confirmed that the French people, like the Vietnamese, passionately love peace. Therefore, respect for international law is crucial to preventing maritime trade losses in the East Sea as well as undesired tensions.

He agreed with proposals of National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung that in the near future the two sides should increase exchanges of high-level delegations, boost turnover to match the relationship of cooperation between the two countries.

Mr. Claude Bartolone informed that the French National Assembly ratified the Agreement on Cooperation between Viet Nam and the EU. France is willing to cooperate with Viet Nam in the areas of its strength namely energy, water, and environmental pollution treatment. France will promote cooperation in training human resources, training and transfer of technology in healthcare, French language teaching, and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese students to study and conduct researches in France.
