Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung paid a working visit to the Kingdom of Belgium

On the same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung held talks with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, discussing measures to promote strong cooperation between the two countries in the future.

At the meeting, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel expressed his pleasure to meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, stating that the visit of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was a vividly demonstration of the close relationship between the two countries and an important opportunity for both sides to jointly assess the development of bilateral cooperation, set out direction to elevate bilateral relations in the coming period, while emphasizing that Belgium wished to develop deeper relations and multifaceted cooperation with Viet Nam.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung thanked the Belgian Government for their warm welcome to the high-level delegation of the Government of Viet Nam, saying that Viet Nam always attaches importance to the comprehensive cooperation with Belgium and is thankful for Prime Minister Charles Michel’s concern and support to the development of bilateral relations in recent years.

Leaders of the two countries hailed Viet Nam-Belgium relation development. The third session of the Viet Nam-Belgium Joint Committee on economic cooperation and bilateral cooperation programs have been implemented. The Prime Ministers agreed on ways to strengthen bilateral ties across politics, economics, culture, education-training, and science-technology while confirming that bilateral commercial and investment relations have developed favorably with two-way trade turnover reaching US$ 2.3 billion in 2014 and US$ 1.6 billion in the first nine months of 2015, and Belgium's investment in Viet Nam amounted to $420 million in 59 projects. However, the two PMs said, there is some room to improve these ties given the potential and aspirations of both countries.

To enhance trade and investment, both sides agreed to accelerate the building and implementation of projects in the fields of logistics, transport, green growth and outer space, while further facilitating imports of each other's goods and steering bilateral cooperation development towards climate change mitigation. The Prime Ministers highly appreciated effective cooperation in education and training between the two countries and agreed to enhance exchange of students and cooperation between educational and training institutions of the two countries. Both sides consented to join hands to boost Viet Nam-EU ties, push forward the EU's ratification of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, early signing of the Viet Nam-EU FTA and effective implementation of these agreements, as well as continue working closely together at the UN, the ASEAN, the Asia-Europe Meeting and the International Francophone Organization.

In the spirit of mutual trust and understanding, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Prime Minister Charles Michel discussed international and regional situation, informed and shared views on the East Sea and the fight against terrorism. The Belgian Prime Minister stressed that Belgium supports the settlement of the East Sea issue by peaceful means in line with international law, the UN Charter, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, towards reaching a political and legally-binding agreement among parties concerned.

Prime Minister Charles Michel believed that the visit by the Vietnamese Prime Minister would deepen friendship and all-around collaboration between Viet Nam and Belgium for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity in the region and the world. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung thanked the Belgian Government for its warm welcome and hospitality towards the high-level delegation of the Government of Viet Nam, and invited the Belgian government leader to visit Viet Nam in the foreseeable future.

*** In the framework of the visit to the Kingdom of Belgium, following talks with the Belgian Prime Minister, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had separate talks with the President of the Belgian Lower House Siegfried Bracke and Belgian Senate President Christine Defraigne.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and leaders of the Belgian Parliament discussed bilateral relations as well as emerging international and regional issues. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Chairmen of Belgium Lower House and the President of Belgian Senate expressed satisfaction at the positive development of cooperation between Viet Nam and Belgium in many fields and at all levels in recent years, at the same time noted with elation the increasingly tightened relations between the two countries' Parliaments. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung spoke highly of the Belgian Senate and Lower House's role in promoting Viet Nam-Belgium ties as well as their contributions to the success of the 132nd Assembly of the World Inter-Parliamentary Union that was held in Ha Noi last March.

Chairman of the Lower House and President of the Senate of Belgium agreed with measures to promote cooperation between Viet Nam and Belgian reached by the Prime Ministers of the two countries in their talks. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and leaders of the Belgian Lower House, and the Senate said Viet Nam and Belgium should continue to play up their strengths, live up to requirements of the two countries in the current stage of development, effectively implement agreed projects, harness potential in the areas of economy, trade, investment and education and training, science and technology, and strengthen development cooperation and response to climate change.

Chairman of the Lower House and President of the Senate of Belgium affirmed their support to the strengthening of the Viet Nam-European Union comprehensive partnership, the EU's early ratification of the Partnership and Co-operation Agreement with Viet Nam, recognition of Viet Nam as a market economy as well as the early signing of the Viet Nam-EU free trade agreement.

Earlier, immediately after the arrival in Belgium, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with staff of the embassy of Viet Nam and Vietnamese community who are studying, working and living in Belgium. On behalf of the Government, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung conveyed best wishes to the embassy’s staff and Vietnamese overseas residing in Belgium. He briefed them on Viet Nam’s socio-economic situation, confirming that the results achieved in the construction and development of the country are conducive to the efforts and contributions of the entire Party, army and people, including overseas Vietnamese-an important integral and inseparable part of Viet Nam.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung encouraged the Vietnamese community in Belgium to continue to uphold the tradition of solidarity, mutual assistance in life, abide by local laws, act as a bridge to strengthen the ties between Viet Nam and Belgium in different fields, maintain and promote national cultural identity while turning their hearts to Viet Nam, and contributing to build Viet Nam into a strong country with prosperous people, democracy, equity and civilization. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung urged the Vietnamese embassy’s staff to continue bringing into play the spirit of unity, and striving their utmost to successfully realize their assigned tasks.
