Vietnam prioritizes strengthening ties with Cambodia

Cambodian National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin and Vietnamese National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan conducted talks, after the welcome ceremony. Chairman Samdech Heng Samrin warmly welcomed the official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia by Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and the high-level delegation of the National Assembly of Vietnam, confirming that the visit was of important significance and an evidence of the strengthened solidarity and friendship between the two countries, the two parliaments and the two peoples.

Congratulating Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan for her election as Chairwoman of the Vietnamese National Assembly, Chairman Samdech Heng Samrin stressed that during the last four national assembly legislatures, the friendly relations and cooperation between the two sides have been continuously consolidated and developed. He expressed his belief that this good relationship will continue to grow in the coming period.

While expressing her pleasure to visit the Kingdom of Cambodia, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said this was her first trip abroad in her capacity as Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam with the desire to share solidarity, friendship, traditional and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Two National Assembly Chairpersons briefed each other of the socio-economic development in each country and activities of each National Assembly. The two sides maintained that, in the context of complicated international and regional situation, the solidarity between the two countries should be strengthened and developed. Vietnam affirmed its unswerving stance to attach importance and give top priority to the consolidation and strengthening of good neighborliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive, long-term and sustainable cooperation with Cambodia.

The two National Assembly Chairpersons were delighted to note that economic trade and investment cooperation between the two countries continue to develop comprehensively in many areas from the central to local authorities. Up to now, Vietnamese enterprises have invested 182 projects in Cambodia with a total registered capital of US$2.85. The projects have been implemented across key areas; several major projects have promoted socio-economic development in Cambodia such as agriculture, forestry, energy, financial, banking, insurance, and telecommunication.

The Chairman of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia welcomed the agreements signed by the two governments and emphasized that the Cambodian National Assembly will monitor the implementation of these agreements, especially those in transport, and infrastructure connectivity.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan thanked the National Assembly, and the Government of Cambodia for facilitating the Vietnamese community living, working and contributing to building, and developing the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Along with the fine political relations, cooperation between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the Cambodian National Assembly and Senate has been developing. To deepen this cooperation between the two countries and the two National Assemblies, Chairman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan requested the Cambodia National Assembly and Parliamentarians to continue fostering solidarity, friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Cambodian National Assembly Chairman suggested the Parliamentary groups and Parliamentarians of the two countries to continue cooperating and sharing experience in both bilateral and multilateral mechanisms. On this occasion, the Cambodian leader expressed thanks to the National Assembly of Vietnam for its active support and assistance to the training of human resources, provision of equipment in order to improve efficiency and operations the Cambodian National Assembly.

The two National Assembly Chairpersons agreed to bolster the role of parliamentary oversight of the implementation of the agreements reached between the two government, continue to share, support, consult each other on international issues of mutual concern, enhance close cooperation in international and regional inter-parliamentary forums that both countries are members.

Within the framework of the visit to Cambodia, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan paid a courtesy visit to Cambodia's King Sihamoni, and met with Prime Minister Hun Sen. King Norodom Sihamoni affirmed that the Cambodian people always remember the support and valuable assistance of the Vietnamese people, saying that Vietnam is a great friend of the people of Cambodia which has provided great support for Cambodia’s independence and freedom in the past, as well as the current national construction.

At a meeting with Cambodian Senate President Say Chhum, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan welcomed the achievements on border demarcation between the two countries. The two sides expressed the desire to resolve the outstanding issue on the entire border of the two countries to build a border of peace, friendship, cooperation and development, considering it a valuable asset for future generations.
