Chairwoman of the National
Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and a high-ranking delegation of the
Vietnam National Assembly attended the 11th Global Summit of Women
Speakers of Parliament from 11-13 December 2016 in Abu Dhabi, the
capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This is the first time
Vietnam has a National Assembly Chairwoman attending the Summit.
Chairwoman of the Federal National Council (Parliament) of UAE, Dr. A. Al Qubaisi thanked the delegates for their participation, affirming that the attendance of 50 Women Speakers of Parliament, and representatives of foreign government agencies, and international organizations have contributed to the overall success of the summit. After two days’ working, the Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament unanimously adopted the Abu Dhabi Declaration “United Shaping the Future for a Better World”.
The Declaration affirms 38 provisions in the Declaration of the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament entitled placing democracy at the service of peace and sustainable development: Building the world the people want, reiterating the principles and recommended actions in the summary report of the 10th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament on Innovating for Gender Equality: Realizing development, peace and democracy for women and men.
The Declaration commits to contribute to realizing the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, as well as addressing all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls.
The Declaration agrees to “United Shaping the Future for a Better World” through commitment on cooperation and promotion of partnerships between governments, private sector and society in general to address the challenges facing the world.
In the Abu Dhabi Declaration, the Women Speakers of Parliament pledge to place the well-being of their people, peace, prosperity, and the integrity of both their planet and humanity at the core of their parliamentary strategic objectives, and make them central to their development efforts.
Earlier, speaking at a separate session on the Abu Dhabi Declaration, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hailed the Federal National Council of UAE and the Secretariat of the World Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for drafting the of Abu Dhabi Declaration, expressing the will and commitment of Women Speakers of Parliament in jointly addressing global challenges to peace, security and sustainable development.
The 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament conducted four seminars. Accordingly, participants discussed the following topics: “Management of tolerance”, “Youth’s points of view”, “Transforming Technology: Opportunities and Challenges”, “Innovation of Parliament for a better future”.
Immediately after the closing of the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, on 13 December, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan met with Vietnamese embassy staff and representatives of Vietnamese community in the United Arab Emirate (UAE).
The Chairwoman informed the Vietnamese community in the UAE the results as well as the contribution of the Vietnamese National Assembly high-level delegation to the overall success of the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, saying the Abu Dhabi Declaration reflects Vietnam’s recommendation on peace and security. This content demonstrates the will and commitment of Women Speakers of Parliament in jointly addressing global challenges to peace, security and sustainable development, the role of Parliament in promoting conflict resolution by peaceful means, and respecting fully international law. In addition, the Vietnam National Assembly Chairwoman had an intervention and co-chaired the session under the theme "United to protect a healthy planet" and had meetings, bilateral high-level contacts.
National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and the high-level delegation of the National Assembly left for Vietnam on 14 December, wrapping up a series of activities at the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament at the invitation of President of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Saber Chowdhury and President of the Federal National Council of UAE Federation Al Amal Qubaisi./.
