Vietnamese Prime Minister attended the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2017

The 26th WEF-ASEAN was attended by more than 600 delegates, including Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Lao Prime Minister Thoonglun Sisoulith, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte; many ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and regional countries such as Japan, South Korea and leaders of many international organizations, large corporations in the region and the world.

During the conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended and delivered a speech at the opening plenary entitled "ASEAN: 50 Years Young," joined the dialogue session among leaders (IGWEL) of "ASEAN: 50 Years," discussion on "Investment in smart infrastructure," presentation on the report of the ASEAN Regional Strategy Group (RSG), the special topic discussion on Vietnam, the closing session and the handover ceremony of the WEF-ASEAN 2018 to Viet Nam.

On the sidelines of the conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received and met with leaders of major regional and international organizations and groups such as WEF Managing Director Philipp Roesler, President of the ASEAN Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) Jin Liqun, Global Director of Cisco Goh Seow Hiong, President - Asia Pacific Procter & Gamble Magesvaran Surajan, HSBC Regional Head Doreen Steidle, Vice President of Shire Linda Seah, Vice President of GE Group Christian Bennett.

Speaking at the working sessions, the Prime Minister emphasized that the dynamic development of ASEAN is opening up many favorable opportunities for enterprises of countries including Vietnam - one of the most active economies with a Gross Domestic Products’ (GDP) average increase by 6% in the past 30 years and expected to increase by 6.5-7% in the 2017-2020 period.

The Prime Minister also assessed that, like other ASEAN countries, Vietnam has a large potential market for innovation with young people under 35 accounting for 60% of the population and about 52% of the population using the internet. It is continuing to promote international integration through the signing of many Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), including FTAs with high standards and with ASEAN countries moving towards a unified ASEAN market.

In that spirit, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc urged the WEF-ASEAN to consider setting up a working group to study, and make recommendations on education policy, vocational training, and formation of start-up idea market and encourage entrepreneurs to invest in or buy start-up ideas of young ASEAN talents. "Vietnam will do its utmost to join ASEAN and its partners in achieving this noble goal," he said.

At the talk on Vietnam, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stated that Vietnam is determined to build a constructive and development government and affirmed the policy to develop private enterprises to play an important role in the economy, promote institutional reform, create a favorable environment for businesses and people, especially the younger generation to take advantage of the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution, revitalize education, heighten start-up spirit, creativity and dynamism of the whole country.

In that spirit, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed hope that international businesses and investors would cooperate with Vietnam for mutual benefit in the win-win manner.

On this occasion, as the host of APEC 2017, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc welcomed delegates to Vietnam to participate in APEC activities to share ideas and opportunities for cooperation and prosperity of the region.

At the closing session, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc took over the role of the WEF-ASEAN 2018 host country. Maintaining that the selection of Vietnam as the host to the regional WEF once again is a demonstration for the strong development of the partnership between Vietnam and WEF as well as between Vietnam and the business community, the Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam would cooperate with WEF and its partner countries to successfully host the WEF-ASEAN 2018 in Vietnam.
