Tightening the friendship between Vietnam and the Czech Republic

During the visit, President Milos Zeman held talks with President Tran Dai Quang, met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, attended the Vietnam-Czech Business Forum and met the Vietnam-Czech Friendship Association. The Czech President was accompanied by a large business delegation organized by the Confederation of Czech Industry comprising representatives from 60 companies from different sectors.

During talks and meetings which took place in a friendly, constructive atmosphere of mutual understanding the two sides informed each other of the political, economic, and foreign policy priorities in their respective countries. The two sides welcomed the maintenance and strengthening of high-level political dialogues as well as the exchange of delegations between ministries, agencies and regions of the two countries, discussed concrete measures how to promote bilateral relations and exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest and concerns.

Bilateral trade and investment cooperation have been stable, two-way trade turnover has averaged US$250 million a year in recent years. To bring economic cooperation to a new height, the two sides agreed to further improve the efficiency of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, strengthen trade promotion, investment, encourage and facilitate businesses of the two countries to connect partners, explore markets, especially in areas of strength of the Czech Republic and areas of needs of Vietnam, such as infrastructure, food processing, pharmaceuticals, urban planning, public transport, environment protection and water resource management. The two sides signed seven memorandums of understanding between the following partners: Optokon Group and Sinh Phúc Technology Systems; Drevojas and Hạo Canh Porcelain Production and Trading; East Sea Travel & Air Service Group and Indovina Bank; ClineX and Dapharco; Techniserv Group and Yestech; Na Homolce Hospital and Viet Nam Friendship Hospital; and Vari JSC and James Boat Technology JSC.

In addition, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of agriculture, science and technology, environment, energy, education and training, culture, tourism, justice and law. On the basis of the well-established relations in the area of defense, both sides seek ways to further enhance relations in the area of defense across the spectrum.

Stressing the importance of human dimension in political and economic collaboration, the two sides shared view that democracy and rule of law are the core principles which both sides are aiming to promote. The two sides agreed to cooperate in the promotion and protection of human rights, including the implementation of international human rights instruments. The Vietnamese sides expressed gratitude to the Czech Republic State and people for creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community living in the Czech Republic to integrate and settle in the Czech Republic, expressing the belief that the Vietnamese community continues to play an active role in fostering the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides shared the deep concern over the real threats posed by terrorism, extremism, illicit drugs trafficking, and other transnational organized crimes to the world and reached mutual understanding that strengthening the cooperation in countering these threats is needed. Accordingly, the two sides signed the Treaty on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons and the Agreement on Cooperation in Combating Crime between the Governments of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Czech Republic.

Regarding regional and international issues, the two sides agreed to promote mutual exchange and support on issues of mutual concern, committed to coordinating and working more closely at international and regional organizations and forums, especially at the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Asia-Europe Cooperation Forum (ASEM), and consider and support each other’s candidacy for international organizations and forums. The two sides pledged to maintain peace, stability, security, maritime safety, freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, and stressed the importance of resolving territorial disputes through peaceful means, in accordance with international law.

President Milos Zeman's State visit to Vietnam is a significant political event, contributing to deepening the traditional friendship and multifaceted effective and practical cooperation between the two countries in the new stage.
