Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and General Secretary, President Xi Jinping visit the booths of Vietnamese businesses at CIIE 2018

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc engaged in an array of activities such as attending the opening ceremony of CIIE 2018 and the Hongqiao International Economic and Trade Forum; visited the booths of other countries, and commercial booths of Vietnamese businesses. The Prime Minister had talks with Chinese Party General Secretary, President Xi Jinping, Mayor of Shanghai Ying Yong, held dialogues with and received many leading Chinese enterprises, and attended the opening ceremony of a Vietnamese trade promotion office in Hangzhou city.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of CIIE 2018, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highly appreciated the Expo organization, which showed the wish for win-win cooperation and mutual benefit, promotion of economic and trade partnerships to give a strong boost to regional and global economic growth.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized that Vietnam always attaches importance to enhancing stable cooperation with China and wants to join the latter - its biggest trade partner - to step up economic and trade ties in a sustainable and mutually beneficial manner. Vietnam supports liberalized, fair, transparent and inclusive trade based on the World Trade Organization’s rules. The Vietnamese Government pledges to create an optimal business climate meeting advanced international standards and high standards in new-generation free trade agreements that the country has joined. The Prime Minister expressed his hope that businesses of other countries, especially China, will understand more about Vietnam’s products and development potential and join hands to bolster sustainable and mutually beneficial trade ties.

After the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited Vietnamese pavilion where 25 businesses with high export capacity, prestigious and high quality brands showcased their agricultural products, processed food and information technology services. In the framework of the Expo, Vietnamese businesses held many meetings and exchanges with partners of China and other participating countries to seek opportunities for cooperation and investment in the future.

On the occasion of CIIE 2018, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with Chinese Party General Secretary, President Xi Jinping.

At the talks, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to developing the countries’ friendship in a stable, healthy and sustainable fashion and considers this one of the top priorities in its foreign policy. He also asked the two sides to maintain high-ranking visits and meetings and intensify political trust. He expressed his belief that the CIIE 2018 will open up new cooperation channels for goods distribution, helping promote official trade activities and brand building so that more Vietnamese commodities would be consumed in the Chinese market, not only in the southern border provinces, but also in the north-eastern provinces of China. The Prime Minister suggested the Chinese side make it easier for Vietnamese goods to enter its market, and devise practical policies and measures to reduce Vietnam’s big trade deficit, towards promoting stable and sustainable growth of bilateral trade while highly welcoming Chinese high-tech businesses to invest in Vietnam.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the Prime Minister applauded the positive results of negotiation and cooperation mechanisms in less sensitive sea-related areas between the two countries, as well as the initial progress in pragmatic negotiations on a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) between ASEAN and China recently. He called on both sides to respect each other’s legitimate interests while seriously realizing the common perceptions of the two countries' leaders and the agreement on the basic principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues; patiently resolve disputes by peaceful means, in accordance with international law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and maintain peace and stability in the East Sea and the region.

At the talks, Chinese Party Secretary General and President Xi Jinping emphasized that the Party and State of China sets great store by relations with Vietnam and agreed to maintain high level of contact, build up political trust, promote substantial cooperation, maintain peace and stability at sea, create a favorable environment for the two countries' relations. General Secretary, President Xi Jinping said China would not pursue trade surplus with Viet Nam and would increase its imports from Vietnam so that the two countries' trade would develop in a balanced and sustainable manner.

In Shanghai, China's largest economic development center, the Prime Minister and the Vietnamese delegation also met with many executives of major Chinese firms and “elites” of the Chinese economy to foster cooperation in agriculture, finance, insurance, banking, construction, transport, energy and distribution.

The Prime Minister emphasized the wish that Chinese businesses would further expand their imports of Vietnam's high-quality agricultural products and seafood, aiming at balancing bilateral trade. He expressed the hope that businesses of the two countries connect for win-win and mutually beneficial cooperation. The Prime Minister assigned leaders of ministries and branches to receive suggestions from businesses and work on specific issues, implement investment and business ideas, especially in production and processing of high quality agricultural products.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s participation in CIIE 2018 shows that Vietnam attaches importance to the development of a stable and healthy relationship with China in order to promote sustainable economic and trade cooperation, encourage ministries, branches and localities and businesses of the two countries to strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit and mutual support in organizing major events of each country.
